Recurring and special projects include audit and consulting services to nonprofit and healthcare organizations, labor unions, and ERISA benefit funds; assistance to other CPAs in addressing DOL penalties for rejection of Form 5500, and service as technical reviewer for ERISA audits; corporate acquisition "due diligence" assistance; litigation support in corporate dissolution; IRS Form 990 audit representation.

Responsible for all phases of client service, research, and technical support.

Clients concentrated approximately 70% Taft-Hartley employee benefit funds and labor unions, and 30% commercial, primarily long-term construction contractors.

Represented labor/ERISA clients on issues such as associate membership dues/unrelated business income tax, disqualification of a 3,500 member pension fund, ERISA preemption of NYS UBT; worked with attorneys to successfully defend against DOL's imposition of $450,000 filing penalty. Represented commercial clients in tax issues such as unreasonable compensation, sales tax, deductibility of legal fees in stockholder dispute, uniform capitalization and accounting methods, various S-corporation matters, passive loss and at-risk loss limitations. Provided tax planning for high net-worth clients.

Assisted clients in the installation of MAS 90 accounting software, trained clients in its operations, and provided technical support.

Planned and implemented firm's Quality Control Program, and brought firm through three successful reviews under the AICPA Quality Review Program.

Introduced computers to practice, trained staff, brought tax preparation in-house, and installed research capability on Lexis/Nexis, CD-ROM, and internet.

Designed and wrote software to perform actuarial calculations required to report post-retirement welfare benefits under SOP 92-6, and performed such calculations as special projects on 8 welfare funds (averaging 1800 participants) in 1997.

Secured NYS approval of firm as provider of continuing professional education, and managed firm's CPE programs for 5 years.

Wrote firm's newsletter.

Created and promoted a web site (www.cpaspan.com) for trustees and administrators of multiemployer plans.

1979-1987 Auditor; last 3 years as senior manager. Major clients included banks, retailers, nonprofits, and health care. Managed initial public offerings for Seaman Furniture and Southhold Savings Bank, adoption of LIFO by Fortunoff, cost reporting and reimbursement consulting for an 889 bed nursing home. Coordinated office's personal computer resources and training.
